Found myself in Portland the other night at a gospel gathering courtesy of a friend invite and something the preacher said caught my attention, besides the old man a row ahead of me picking his teeth nearly the whole sermon or the old man behind me continuously snorting his snot up through his nostrils, God!, help me not to become a disgusting old man, but charming. Anyway, he said, "...don't question the Bible, just believe!" I was wondering if any followers had a thought on this statement and if so please do entertain. They also laid claim that the King James Version is the only version that should be used. Loved to hear your thoughts!

Personally, my favourite version of the Bible is the New Living Translation. I feel that I can understand it more than I ever would the King James Version. Whatever the version it's still up to the readers discernment of what it means. One version may speak to someone more than another version or it may help someone understand the Message better.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your reply AlyKay! Well after the sermon I was a bit distraught by what I heard so I went and asked the preacher what he meant. He told me that the statement was not intended to mean blind conformity but rather a deeper faith for God. Like, when we have studied the word and laid the foundations for our apologetics and convictions that we should not allow ourselves to think that we can understand every detail of who God is and at this point we should not doubt but have faith and just believe. This saying goes well with Isaiah 55:8-9 and Deut. 29:29. As for the King James Version essentially under this statement he was not denouncing other versions that bring individuals to Christ, but refering to the KJV as the closest and most accurate version that we have today. It's an interesting study but some things to keep in mind are that the English language is not a romance language and certain version are translated by ideas while others are word for word.
ReplyDeleteHey these are my thoughts on the hole thing....i personally think that we should respect every bible version that has all of our beliefs that no ones changed or anything but growing up as a girl in the US and raised talking in a different way than the old bibles i find it very hard to really relate and use it in day to day life becuz i dont understand exactly all the content and some of it just plainly goes right over my head...and i like the NIV jusst becuz i understand it and i actually get what is being said...but i do see where he could think that KJV is more acurate becuz it hasnt been changed to fit americas way of speech and changed so many times...i am not saying i agree but i would understand where he was coming from...:)
ReplyDeletemy thoughts are that it is easier for me to relate to NIV like karissa, but as long as the meaning of the scripture has not changed i believe that every version can help each individual differently. KJV is probably the most acurate i would imagine, but some people like me can probably get more out of a NIV...to me it's almost the same as translating the bible, since KJV is almost another language, or just really hard to get what they r saying. ----might not be of much help but...oh well. :) ~meg
